Subverses refers constantly to two continuities, namely the colonial heritage of Africa, which appears to be experiencing a new peak due to its economic engagement of China, and the flipside of this investment; exploitation. The rights of workers fall victim to the profit-oriented thinking of the foreign companies and discrimination is the rule. Construction workers and slam poets tell about the dark side of the investment. As we observe the frustration and anger of the workers accumulate, the African poets advocate justice and autonomy in their verses. Through the combination of poetic language and beautiful pictures, the serious issue surrounded by a captivating beauty and personal observations by Raidel come very close to Mozambican reality.
